Country house. Dated 1780 on waterspout, probably incorporating remains of
C17 house; rear wings of 1814, partly demolished 1978-79. For the Shepherd
family. Stone with slate roofs. Double pile plan with rear service wing
added. Interior: 4 pairs of upper crucks, reused from the earlier house,
support the roof of the C18 rebuilding. The 1814 wing has 4 scissor-brace
truses. There is said to be a carved overmantel dated 1659 and another
fireplace of 1666. The Shepherd family had an unbroken existence in
Douthwaite Dale from c1500 to 1886. The above brief description is based on
the reference given below, since access to the house and permission to photo-
graph were denied at resurvey. North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular
Buildings Study Group Report No H870: "Hutton-le-Hole, Douthwaite Hall (or
Lodge)", 1980.

Small country house. Main house of 1760, on rainwaterhead. Rear wing of
1814, altered in late C19 or early C20. Renovation and some demolition
1978-79. For the Shepherd family. C18 part of dressed and hammered
sandstone on hammered sandstone plinth. Raised and chamfered quoins;
sandstone ashlar door and window cases. C19 wing of herringbone-tooled
sandstone. Stone slate roofs. Central stairhall, double depth plan; L-
shaped wing added at rear. C18 house. 2-storey and attic, 3-window front.
Panelled door in pedimented doorcase. 12-pane sash over door and 16-pane
sashes on both floors to left and right. All windows have plain raised
surrounds with triple keyblocks. Raised first-floor band, continuing around
building. Gavetto-moulded eaves cornice returned at each end, and
continuing as raised eaves bands on both returns. Hipped gabled dormers
with small-pane casements. Coped gables and shaped kneelers. End stacks to
both ranges of M-shaped roof. Rear: Venetian staircase window with small-
pane sashes, in plain raised surround. Left return: 16-pane sashes at left
of both floors. Paired 12-pane sashes in attic. Dated rainwaterhead in
centre. Right return: inserted oriel window on first floor, and paired sash
windows in plain raised surround in attic. Parapet masks roof. 1814 wing.
2-storey, 2-window front, with 2-storey, 3-window projecting range at left.
Shallow canted bay with French window on ground floor right. 16-pane sash
above. Full-height canted bay window at left. Bay windows contain
decorative diamond lattice glazing. Windows in gable end of projecting
range are similarly glazed, and remaining windows are 12- and 16-pane
sashes. Hipped roof to projecting range. Interior. Following information
taken from the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study
Group report number H870: Hutton-le-Hole, Douthwaite Hall (or Lodge). Four
pairs of upper crucks, reused from an earlier house, support the roof of the
C18 house. 1814 wing has four scissor brace trusses. Carved overmantel
dated 1659 and chimney-piece of 1666. The Shepherd family enjoyed unbroken
occupation of Douthwaite from c1500 to 1886.
