Description

LASTINGHAM SPAUNTON MOOR
SE 79 SW
7/113 Ana Cross
- II

Waymarker cross. Early C19. Diagonally-tooled gritstone. Square section
cross on a rectangular base. The base is of 2 massive stones, clamped
together. Cross approximately 3 metres high, the head cut from a single
separate block. The C19 cross replaced the medieval Ain Howe cross, the head
of which lies in the crypt of the Church of St Mary, Lastingham (qv). Ain Howe
cross, like the Victoria cross on Lidsty Hill, Spaunton (qv), is thought to
have been a sanctuary cross of that church.
