12/57 Atlas Fountain and pond
Fountain in which it stands. 1850. Designed by W A Nesfield. Figures
executed by John Thomas, tazza, pedestals, shells and basin by local
craftsmen, jets and fittings by James Easton. Figures in Portland stone,
globe of bronze. Pond approximately 27 metres in diameter. 4 recumbent
Tritons blow water over Atlas kneeling on a pedestal in the central tazza.
The figures were transported by rail from London to Castle Howard station.
Thomas was paid £1183/10/3 for his work. The fountain was exhibited at the
