Statue of Farnese Hercules and the plinth on which it stands. Statue 1723
by Andrew Carpenter. Sandstone pedestal, lead statue. Pedestal 2.25
metres, statue life size. 2 steps up to pedestal with cavetto-moulded base
and sunk panels bearing garlands carved in relief and egg-and-dart cornice.
Statue of the Farnese Hercules, a very muscular, bearded figure, from a C3
AD copy of a Greek original, now in Museo Nationale, Naples. Haskell F and
Penny N, Taste and the Antique, 1981, p 229. HBMC, Register of Parks and
Gardens of special historic interest in England, Part 32, North Yorkshire:
