Garden walls, gateways and gate piers at either side of Nunnington Hall.
Late C17; south gateway relocated from north side of Nunnington Hall during
minor alterations by Walter Brierley. Gateways and gate piers of limestone
ashlar with walls of dressed limestone; wrought- and cast-iron gates.
Walls: approximately 3.5 metres high, originally with moulded coping,
replaced in places by flat coping. Gateways in north and south garden
walls. Approximately 5.8 metres high, of bolstered blocks beneath
entablature with moulded cornice and broken pediment,containing cartouche,
and ball and pedestal finial. Gateway in south wall replaces a clair-voyee
which was part of the original garden design and subsequently removed.
Present gateway contains wrought-iron gate which reproduces the balcony
design on the hall south front. Gate piers in east and west garden walls.
Approximately 4.5 metres high, of bolstered blocks with moulded cornice and
ball and pedestal finials. Opening in east wall contains cast-iron gates of
fleur-de-lys-tipped railings.
