GV II
Gates, gate piers, walls and railings. Early C19. Timber and cast-iron
gates; sandstone ashlar gate piers; tooled sandstone wall and cast-iron
railings. Double carriage gates and piers, with footgates on each side,
flanked by curving walls with railings and terminal piers. Chinese
Chippendale pattern carriage gates, and footgates, ramped up, with open
halberd tips. 3 square-section gate piers with raised panels on 2 sides,
sunk on the other 2, double cornices and shallow pyramidal caps. Broken
fourth pier lies behind the gates. Low flanking walls with chamfered coping
carry railings. Terminal piers repeat gate piers with single cornice only.
Gateway was the original principal entrance to Scampston Hall (qv).
