Church. Arcade of c1200, early C14 chancel, C14 south arcade, late C15
tower, C19 organ chamber and restoration. Sandstone rubble and ashlar,
Westmorland slate roof. West tower, 3-bay aisled nave with north porch, 3-
bay chancel with organ chamber to north. 2-stage -tower with stepped
diagonal buttresses. West window of 4 stepped round-headed transomed lights
beneath pointed hoodmould. Belfry openings of 3 round-headed lights under
elliptical arch to each face. Embattled parapet with pinnacles. North
aisle: C19 windows in Geometrical and Decorated style. North porch: pointed
doorway beneath divided overlight flanked by pilasters carrying concave-
moulded capitals and banded pediment. South aisle: pointed doorway of 2
chamfered orders in 2nd bay. Flat-headed 2-light cusped ogee windows, that
to west being C19. Chancel: to north and organ chamber with 2-light east
window in Decorated style. To south: basket-arched priest's door beneath
Tudor-arched window of 4 stepped round-headed lights. 3-light reticulated
window to left, and 2-light Decorated window to right. East end: C19 3-
light window with reticulated tracery. Interior: arcades on slender I
cylindrical piers with square abaci and pointed arches of 2 orders, those to
north chamfered, those to south plain. South aisle contains C14 ogee-arched
tomb recess with elaborate crockets and sub-cusping. Also in south aisle
east end stone effigies to Sir Nicholas Fairfax, died 1572, and his 2 wives.
At west end, tomb to Sir Thomas Fairfax, died 1828, and his wife: white
marble figure of Piety reclining over 2 urns. 2 deeply incised floriate
cross grave slabs near this tomb. Anon "The Church of the Holy Cross,
