Description

SE 3171 RIPON KIRKGATE
1/85 (south side)
6.5.70

No 19
GV
II

C16, enlarged (according to deeds) in 1760, by Joseph Drake, carpenter, and evidently
refronted in mid C19. Brown brick. Pantiled roof. Three storeys. Paired cut
brackets to gutter. Two bays: sashes with chanelled stucco voussoirs. Contemporary
shopfront with panelled Tuscan pilasters and entablature: door with 2 moulded panels
and oblong fanlight.

Interior. Wide ingle nook, whose bressummer takes a beam with pyramidal chamfers (of
a type apparently unknown locally before the C17).

The 1760 enlargement evidently gave it a gabled upper storey, shown in J M W Turner's
drawing of Kirkgate dated 1797 (British Museum).
