Small building approximately 30 metres west of stables at Plompton Hall (formerly listed as Pigeon House or Granary at Plumpton Hall)

Small building, now a stable. c1757. Probably by John Carr. For Daniel
Lascelles. Ashlar, stone slate roof. Square in plan, approximately 4.5
metres across. South face: low plinth. Central doorway with plain lintel.
Projecting band, moulded cornice and dentilled, moulded eaves cornice with
low parapet. Pyramidal roof, central stack or flue. Rear (north face):
arched recess contains square window, frame not original. Left and right
returns: arched recess with moulded archivolt above cornice level.
Interior: lined in red brick, cement-washed on lower 2 metres, with fine
groined vault which springs from external cornice level. Inserted brick
oven and iron bowl for heating mash in north-west corner. Inserted beam
approximately 3 metres above floor. The building has been described as a
pigeon house or granary but neither use can be proved - there is no evidence
for any nesting boxes against the existing brick walling, and the central
chimney or ventilator could not have served as an entrance for birds. The
building was used in the late C19 or early C20 for butchering but its
original purpose is not known.
