Barn and 2 ranges of outbuildings. c1760 with later alterations. Possibly
by John Carr as part of the scheme for Daniel Lascelles' Plompton Estate.
Red brick, English bond, and gritstone. Westmorland slate roof. The
buildings form a U-shaped plan, composed of a 2-storey range (to north),
with single-storey west and east ranges enclosing a south-facing yard.
North range, north elevation: barn of 7 bays; tall central bay with cart
door and circular blocked window above. Dove-cote in semicircular recess
above. Original segmental cart entrance with voussoirs and drip-mould,
left; C20 enlargement of similar opening, right. Brick piers support roof
structure and panels between are filled with coursed stone in upper storey.
Sandstone eaves cornice to central block, deep eaves with wooden boarding
and paired brackets to flanking bays. Hipped roof of shallow pitch. C20
wooden superstructure on roof, right. West range: 7 bays long - the 2
nearest the barn are an open-sided animal shelter, the southern 5 bays are
closed sheds with board doors and plain stone lintels. East range - an
animal shelter of 16 bays with sandstone columns supporting roof. Southern
4 bays are closed sheds with board doors. No openings on east side of this
long range. C20 alterations include partial blocking to open-sided shelter
and roofing over yard. The north elevation of the barn is very similar to
the stable range at Goldsborough Hall (q.v.), where John Carr was employed
after Daniel Lascelles decided to abandon work at Plompton, c1762. The
layout of this farm group is typical of mid to late C18 planned farms.
