Gates, overthrow, gate piers, flanking walls, railings and lodge house.
c1730 for John Aislabie; restored 1967 and 1985. Wrought iron and ashlar;
foliage replaced in phospher bronze, shield of lead. Gates: 2 leaves, bars
and dogbars with scrolled decoration; overthrow decorated with scrolls,
foliage and shield. Flanking piers: approximately 4 metres high overall;
each has moulded base and cornice surmounted by tall urn with garlands and
masks. Flanking walls: each has round-arched pedestrian gateway with plain
gate and pilaster buttress surmounted by ball finial. On left the wall is
ramped down and carries a railing with trefoil finials. A gateway gives
access to the stewards house, now restaurant (qv). The wall returns and
links with the walling of the cascade (qv) in front of the restaurant. On
right is a small lodge house known since 1967 as the 'lemonade house', built
against the wall and undergoing complete rebuilding at time of resurvey. A
lodge, similar in design to the Fishing Tabernacles on the Cascade (qv) and
closing the facade at the west end, stood behind the wall to left, and was
demolished c1860 when the restaurant was built. W T C Walker, personal
