Tunnel approximately 20 metres west of The Octagon Tower, with flanking wall attached to south end, left

Tunnel. c1730. Probably by Robert Doe for John Aislabie. Partly rock-
cut, built up with dressed tufa and limestone blocks in a rustic style.
Approximately 50 metres long, the floor rises steeply and curves to face
east at the uphill end, close to the Octagon Tower (qv). South facade:
round-arched tunnel mouth with massive voussoirs and keystone. Wall
attached to left, approximately 1.5 metres high and 3 metres long, with
narrow round arch opening onto a terrace walk and viewpoint. North facade:
similar to south, but voussoirs and keystone almost monolithic. Interior:
the tunnel lining is pierced by narrow arched recesses, 3 on each side and
each approximately 2 metres high; possibly recesses for statues or
torcheres. Forms a group with the Octagon Tower and Mr Aislabie's Kitchen
(qv).
