Description

SE 2868 LINDRICK WITH STUDLEY STUDLEY PARK
ROYAL AND FOUNTAINS

9/87 Ann Boleyn's Seat at the
Surprise View

GV II

Shelter. Probably before 1790, rebuilt C19 and restored C20. For William
Aislabie. Wood. West front: 3 slender Gothick arches supported by
quatrefoil columns; elaborate crenellated parapet. Single-pitch roof.
Rear: narrow entrance, woodwork renewed, crenellated parapet. Left and
right returns: solid, restored. Interior: concrete floor and plinths for
columns. The structure was originally described as a 'sashed Gothic
temple'. There was a seat at the Surprise View in 1790 and an arched
shelter is shown in an engraving of 1828 (W T C Walker, personal
communication). The name Ann Boleyn is associated with the site because a
large headless statue was erected nearby in the C18. Probably the same
statue (an armless as well as headless female in classical drapery and
originally over 3 metres tall) is now in the sacristy at the base of Huby's
Tower at Fountains Abbey.
