At the west end of the town, set on a hillside above the road. Cruciform medieval
church with central tower retaining a C12 corbel-table and paired openings.
C17 top to tower. C12 corbel-table to chancel. Inside, the crossing arches
to north and east are also C12. Peculiar late Romanesque chevron detail to chancel
arch. Shafts with carved capitals to jambs, hoodmould to arch. Other crossing
arches later. Early C14 south nave arcade. Perpendicular clerestory. Most of
interior (especially the roofs) was extensively restored in C19. Late medieval
incised slab in chancel. Arthur Hallam the subject of Tennyson's 'In Memoriam'
is buried in the south transept.
