SE 25 NW (east side)
14/25 Church of St James the
Church. 1856-57, for John Frederick Greenwood. Coursed squared gritstone,
grey slate roofs. West tower of 3 stages with tall spire. Nave of 4 bays
with north and south aisles, north porch and 2-bay chancel. In late C13 -
early C14 Gothic style. Hoodmoulds with head-stops to doors and geometrical
tracery to windows with hoodmoulds, of 2 lights to nave and chancel; 3-light
east window. Tower: diagonal buttresses, tall belfry window as nave, broach
spire with lucarnes. Interior: pews possibly date from addition of vestry
and organ chamber in 1887. Notable chancel arch with relief carving of
grapes and wheat below springer level. Reredos with figures in mosaic and
marble, pre-Raphaelite in style.
