Barn and byre range. Mid C18 incorporating C16 architectural fragments.
Coursed squared gritstone, stone slate roofs. L-shaped group on north and
west sides of farmyard. Barn to north: large opposing cart entrances to
left of centre. North (rear) wall, east end: blocked doorway with moulded
surround and deep (partly re-cut) chamfer to 4-centred arch. The north and
south walls have stones with fragments of inscriptions to exterior and
interior - some built in upside down. Large Gothic reliefs of C16, possibly
including 'SOL DEO HONOR ET GLORIA', the motto of Abbot Huby of Fountains
(d1526), and mid C18 inscriptions of names and initials. Byre range at west
side of yard: doorways and windows with sandstone surrounds; built on a
plinth of very large blocks on west side, possibly an earlier foundation.
Gothic lettering visible on blocks to east side. Interior: the remains of a
C17 two-storey gable wall with 2-light chamfered mullion upper window are
incorporated into a cross wall near the south end of the building. The farm
stands on the site of Brimham Grange which belonged to Fountains Abbey and
several field walls also contain masonry from the earlier structures.
