Description

WESTON WESTON LANE

East gates, gate piers,
railings and outer piers
to Weston Hall
- II

Gates, gate piers, railings and main piers. Probably mid C18 main piers, mid-
late C19 gates and railings, for the Vavasour family of Weston Hall (qv).
Wrought-iron gates of 2 leaves attached to piers which are linked by railings
to the main outer piers of ashlar and magnesian limestone. Gates and railings;
approximately 2 metres high, bars with scrolled finials, scroll decoration to
borders, flower motif enclosed by circles below lock bar level. Elaborate open-
work gate piers with scroll and flower motifs, approximately 3.5 metres high,
square in section with a central pilaster strip to each face, cyma-moulded
entablature and a deep cornice surmounted by gadrooned urns. The much-weathered
urns are similar to those in the niches of the Banqueting House (qv), suggesting
that there was a second pair of gate piers on the estate, possibly at the cross-
ing of the Wharfe to the south.
