block on east side of
north courtyard of Ripley

Laundry and brewhouse. Probably late C18 for Sir John Ingilby. Coursed
squared gritstone, graduated stone slate roof. A 2-storey, 3-bay block
flanked by lower single-storey 2-bay wings. Plain flush sills and lintels
throughout. The laundry block in the centre has central double board doors
flanked by 16-pane sashes and three 4-pane fixed windows to the first floor.
Left wing: central board door flanked by 2-light casement windows; the right
wing similar but with 16-pane sashes. A pyramid roof with louvred
ventilator and flanking banded stacks to central block. Hipped roofs to
side wings. Interior: the central block is open to the roof and has large
brick-built boiler and coppers against the left-hand wall; a stone bench or
shelf on brick supports stands against the right-hand wall.
