Weir, stone lined basin and footbridge at the lake outlet. 1843-4 for Sir
William Amcott Ingilby. Weir and basin lining of large gritstone blocks;
cast-iron footbridge. The weir is horse-shoe shaped and forms a cascade of
6 tiers; the stone basin is approximately 3 metres deep and stone lined. It
abuts the Tower Bridge (qv). The walls of the basin are built up to provide
support for the footbridge. This has a single shallow span, the iron walkway
supported by a single rib. In Gothick style, with 2 pairs of solid
standards decorated with trefoiled panels and having rounded pyramidal caps.
The railings have 2 tiers of trefoil arches with a band of cinquefoil
roundels at the base and a moulded handrail which ramps down to ground level
at each end. The standards have the cast inscription: "JOSEPH BUTLER / & CO
/ OLD FOUNDRY / STAININGLEY". Sir William Amcott Ingilby had the Ripley
lake made in 1843-44 as part of the landscaping of the park to earlier
designs by Capability Brown. See North Yorkshire Historic Gardens Register
