Cross base and part of shaft. Probably medieval. Gritstone. 2 tiers of
steps, the lowest approximately 1.5 metres square. The cross base is a
square block and the base of the stone shaft, approximately 50 centimetres
high, is set into a socket in the top. The shaft is chamfered on all 4
corners, the chamfers widening possibly towards an octagonal section. The
cross is said to stand on the deserted site of the village of Whipley but it
was possibly a way marker as it stands on trackways leading westwards
towards Pateley Bridge and northwards towards Fountains Abbey, It stands
close to the site of a well. Scheduled Ancient Monument No 416.
