GV II


House, now a children's home. 1895. By Walter H Brierley. Jacobean in
style. Red brick, ashlar dressings, plain tile roof. L-shaped in plan,
main front with service wing at right angle to rear left. Main front:
2 storeys with attics, 4 bays. Plinth to sill level with brick coping.
central board and stud door in quoined chamfered 4-centred arched surround.
Outer bays have full-height canted bay windows with parapets, 5-light .
double-chamfered mullion-and-transom windows with single side lights to
ground floor, above 5-light mullioned windows. To left of door a 5-light
double-chamfered mullion-and-transom window, to right of door a 7-light
mullioned window with 2 major mullions. On first floor the 2 central bays
have 6-light double-chamfered mullioned windows. Above canted bays, 2-light
flat-headed dormers. To central 2 bays near the ridge are 2 smaller 2-light
dormers. Stone coping with parapet stretching round to bay windows.
External gable stacks and large stack to central ridge. Service wing to
right-hand side: main entrance porch with embattled parapet to left,
chamfered round-arched doorway with 2 stone crests above and cornice, to its
right a 3-light chamfered mullioned window. Similar 2-light window to far
left beyond tapering stack. To right, 6 bays with various casement windows.
Interior: large inglenook fireplace in panelled dining-room. 2 other
original fireplaces downstairs.
