Description

KIRBY KNOWLE WHINMOOR HILL
SE 48 NE
(NORTH SIDE, OFF)
4/31 Garden walls to south,
20.6.66 to west and to north of
Kirby Knowle Castle
(fomerly listed as being
garden walls to New building)
GV II

Garden walls. Probably C17 (as house) with C19 and C20 rebuildings and
additions. Coursed squared stone with chamfered coping, varying in height. To
the north of the house the wall steps up either side of a wide entranceway with
moulded quoined surround having a shallow Tudor-arched head with sunk spandrels,
a carved roundel on the monolithic lintel and added ball finials. The wall
terminates at its west end in a later pier with chamfered top and ball and
cushion finial; at its east end it turns southwards towards the house with a
later wide archway, and runs at a low height parallel with the house north front
until, at another angle pier, it turns south again, having an entrance flanked
by ashlar piers with chamfered bases and caps supporting obelisk finials. From
here it returns eastwards to the house, stepping up at house end, and also
continues southwards, ramping down and with a doorway, to enclose a garden to
the south of the house and with its southern wall embattled.
