Folly, then gas-house, now derelict. Early C18 for the 4th Viscount Fauconberg,
converted to gas-house in mid C19. Ashlar sandstone walls lines with brick,
roofless at time of Resurvey. Circular in plan. 2 storeys. Much of stonework
is patched, and hooped with wrought-iron bands, strengthening inserted due to
the stonework having been subjected to great heat when used for manufacturing
gas. Offset plinth. First-floor band. Most original openings altered, but it
appears that 4 first-floor windows were orientated to the cardinal points, and
the ground-floor openings were offset between them: ground floor; to south east,
round-arched doorway with alternately raised and rusticated quoins and
voussoirs, with keystone; to north-east, Venetian window, bricked up. First
floor: windows had keystones, some openings blocked. Interior: Venetian window
had Roman Doric entablature, but against it is a brick retort, with the scars of
a second one further west. There was a gasholder close by. In a derelict state
and ivy-covered at time of Resurvey.
