Description

NORTHALLERTON HIGH STREET
SE 3693-3793
(east side)
7/27 Nos 107 and 108
(formerly listed as No 107
9.12.69 (premises occupied by
P V Mitchell))
GV II
House, now 2 shops. Mid C18 with later alterations. Orange brick in Flemish bond,
pantile roof. 3 storeys, 3 bays. Central ground-floor passage opening flanked
by C20 shop fronts, that to right with projecting canopy. First floor: sill band;
sash windows with flush exposed sash boxes, flat arches with keystones, window in
first bay with glazing bars, the second-bay window blind and painted as if with
glazing bars. Second floor: sill band; half-size sash windows with flush exposed
sash boxes, flat arches with keystones, window in first bay of 6 panes, the window
of second bay blind and painted as if of six panes. Dentil eaves. Stack at right
end. This is a well-detailed elevation: the use of sill bands, with patent
terracotta voussoirs, and in particular the design of the flat arches above the
windows suggests that it may have been designed by John Carr of York.
