Hotel. Possibly dates from the C17, oldest remaining part apparently the low rear wing
which has been much altered and extended to the south. C18 in the main. Brick, colour
washed. Ground floor rendered and has horizontal channelling. Cornice at 1st floor
level and 2nd floor band. Hipped slate roof. 3 storeys. 7 bays arranged 2:3:2 with
slight central breakforward. Central entrance has a late C19 porch with 2 columns
supporting a plain heavy entablature; sash windows with late glazing and plain cills.
At rear a large round headed staircase window with glazing bars. Rear wing:
reddish-brown brick with a string course along part of length. New pantile roof. 2
low storeys. Scattered fenestration. C19 wooden doorcase. Patching indicating
removal of central doorway. Interior of main block: impressive late C17-early C18
staircase with twisted balusters and reeded newel s. At foot of stairs in entrance
hall a pair of somewhat later C18 Ionic columns supporting a ceiling beam. Interior
much altered, part of an early C17 overmantel, formerly on display, now kept in
storage. Thought to have been the Manor House previous to building of Thirsk Hall in
