5/1 Barn approximately
10 metres to north-east
of Alderthwaite Farmhouse
Aisled barn. Probably late C15-C16; encased late C17-early C18. Timber-framed,
thinly-coursed sandstone walling, sheet asbestos roof. Single-storey, 2½ bays
with single aisle. Large quoins. Farmyard side has inserted double doors on
right with wood lintel, 2 rows of slit vents on left, later casement beneath eaves.
Interior: stone paving to right end bay; this and adjacent bay on left display
post and truss framing although front-right post is replaced by a brick pier and
tie beam to far left does not sit on the adjacent wallposts. Long, curved
braces to tie beam and arcade plate off one post. Re-used timbers above tie beam
form principal-rafter trusses with double purlins and ridge beam, re-used rafters
with halvings indicate original roof was of collared-rafter form.
Lean-to buildings at each end not of special interest.
