Colliery explosion monument approximately 5 metres to south of porch to Church of St. Thomas and St. James

Monument. c1875. Ashlar sandstone, cast-iron railings. Square enclosure with
railings rising to north; 4-step plinth to square-sectioned monument.
Enclosure: square corner posts, railing bars infilled with floral panels with
masks, fleur-de-lys finials. Monument: chamfered base, die with panel on south
side inscribed:
"ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION
TO THE MEMORY OF THE 143 MEN AND BOYS
WHO WERE KILLED BY AN EXPLOSION
IN SWAITHE MAIN COLLIERY
ON DECEMBER 6th 1875
'IN THE MIDST OF LIFE WE ARE IN DEATH' "
Cornice beneath block having granite corner shafts and panels depicting tools and
colliery scene. Scaled dome with rounded panels carved with grapes, grain, passion
flowers and primulas. Apex cross.
