GV II*

Dovecote. Probably late C16 - early C17 and for the More family of Barnburgh
Hall. Thinly-coursed rubble limestone, ashlar dressings and lantern, stone
slate roof. Octagonal. Large quoins, chamfered plinth band. Doorway in north
side has chamfered jambs and Tudor-arched lintel with triangular extrados.
Continuous lst-floor dripmould beneath small double-chamfered, 2-light mullioned
window with remains of latticed iron casement. Similar windows on alternate faces,
one without mullion. Chamfered oversailing band beneath eaves. Hipped roof with
octagonal lantern having plain stone pillars to hipped ashlar roof.

Interior: ashlar piers to each internal angle dividing nesting holes said to number
1,600. Central wood post with cross braces for resting ladder on. Conical stone-
vaulted roof. Barnburgh Hall was demolished in 1970. The dovecote is well-preserved
and is an exceptional structure of the region.
