Remains of Sprotbrough Pump situated to north of Sprotbrough Lock

The penultimate sentence of the description should be amended to read:-

Built to pump water approximately 150 feet up to Sprotbrough village to power a
fountain in the grounds of Sprotbrough Hall, Copley, having been inspired by the
fountain at Chatsworth. Later fitted with a 15 feet x 3 feet undershot wheel driving
a 3-throw pump (Falconer, p240).

Remains of water pump. c1700 with later alterations. Original installation by
George Sorocold for Sir Godfrey Copley. Ashlar and rubble limestone walling, no
roof structure. Perimeter wall remains of a square sunken chamber with ashlar-lined
wheel pit retaining wheel. shaft but no associated timberwork. Water inlet to west
has angled wing walls and segmental arch. Elongated enclosure at higher level to
north has shaft with crank and flywheel at west end (remains of pump mechanism).
Derelict at time of resurvey. Built to pump water approximately 150 feet up to a
3-throw pump (Falconer, p240).
