segmental arch of rougher brickwork; C20 casements to each side have similar

Rev. de la Pryme, writing in his diary of 1698 (cited in Tomlinson, p220),
says of Stainfarth '... town is nothing like what it was; there is now
neither Market nor Fair, nor not a good house therein but one, which is
lately built...". Tomlinson records that the house mentioned belonged to
Francis Elwick and cost £1,300 to build; in the C18 it passed by marriage to
the Simpson family. On the evidence it is reasonable to assume that Town End
Farmhouse is the house meant by de la Pryme.
John Tomlinson, The Level of Hatfield Chase and Parts Adjacent, 1882.
