Dovecote and stable block, now store and commercial premises. c1800,
altered. Red brick in English garden wall bond, sheet asbestos roof.
3-storey, 1-bay dovecote with narrow, 2-storey side bays forming links to
2-storey wings which project forward (that on right by 3 bays, that on left
by a + bay). Dovecote: central, boarded stable door and overlight beneath
shallow wedge lintel; square window opening on left and bricked-up opening on
right with low segmental arch. 1st floor: bricked up central window with
projecting sill and wedge lintel. 2nd floor: band beneath lunette with deep
sill and C20 casement window. Dentilled band beneath gable with blind
oculus. Side bay, set back on left, has inserted garage doors below an iron
casement with glazing bars and wedge lintel; attached wing on left has a C20
casement and gabled end and has a doorway in its short right return. Side
bay, set back on right of dovecote, has garage doors beneath lst-floor
loading door. Wing on right (premises of J. H. M. Butt Ltd): altered ground
floor openings on its left return set beneath a central loading door flanked
by C20 casements all with wedge lintels; dentilled eaves and hipped front end
to roof.
Interior: stable beneath dovecote has cobbled floor and 3 round-arched
feeding-rack recesses; dovecote is lined with brick nesting holes.
Originally formed part of courtyard buildings to the Swan Hotel (demolished).
Addition to front of right-hand wing not of special interest.
