II

Entrance gatepiers and attached walls. Probably mid C18 for Josias Wordsworth of Wadworth Hall (q.v.). Ashlar magnesian limestone. Gatepiers set on axis of entrance front of house; convex walls to each side, that on left linking to West Lodge (q.v.), that on right terminating at end pier before returning to link to East Lodge (q.v.). Main piers: square-sectioned with re-entrant corners; moulded plinths, plain shafts with cornices and moulded cappings. The walls are low and have mushroom-domed copings (formerly with iron railings). Plain ashlar end pier on right has pyramidal top.
