BENTLEY WITH ARKSEY BENTLEY ROAD
SE 5O SE
9/44 Causeway to south
of junction with
Yarborough Terrace

II

Causeway. 1832-33. For the Doncaster-Selby Turnpike Trust. Rock-faced and
tooled sandstone. Arcade of 30 segmental arches with an additional skew arch
at north end crossing beneath both Bentley Road and Yarborough Terrace. Most
of the southern arches are original stonework whilst some central arches have
been reinforced with iron plates and tie rods; northern arches mostly renewed
in brick. Continuous band beneath parapet with piers flanking the
northernmost arch and after every fourth arch to south. Domed copings.
Impressive structure probably original to the Doncaster-Selby road turnpiked
following an act of 6th June, 1832. Gave safe passage over the River Don
floodplain.

Copy of the Doncaster-Selby turnpike statute in Doncaster Library Service
Archives, King Edwards Road, Balby.
