Stable-block. Late C18. For the Owston Hall estate. Roughcast rubble
limestone, Westmorland slate roof partly replaced by asbestos sheets.
U-shaped plan with front of courtyard enclosed by curved wing walls to a
central gateway; covered exercise walk across rear, also a lower wing
projecting from left return. 2 storeys, 2 : 3 : 2-bay centre with 3-bay
front wings. Plinth. Pedimented central bays break forward and have 6-panel
doors with 6-pane overlights and 1st-floor band beneath 6-pane sashes with
projecting sills and flat brick arches; the central-bay openings set in a
round-arched recess. Bays 2 and 6 are similar, bays 1 and 7 have ground-
floor sashes with glazing bars. Wing on right: quadrant trough in angle with
centre; left-hand bays have similar doors and sashes; bay 3 has a 2-storey
round-arched panel with large boarded doors with overlight beneath 6-pane
sash. Wing on left similar, its front end wall with blind windows in a
round-arched panel; the wing set back on left with blind windows and end
stack. Main range has hipped roof with yellow brick ridge stacks flanking
the pediment. Rear: arcade of 2 : 2 : 3 : 2 : 2 bays with central gate and
some arches partly walled and others blind; hipped roof extends beyond
central part of stables.
