Cemetery chapel. c1855 by Johnson of Newcastle. Random coursed ashlar with plain
ashlar dressings and slate roofs. Two single-storey chapels, set at right angles,
with central tower between; each chapel of three bays and tower of two stages.
Double chamfered plinth throughout. Central tower has large pointed archway
through; moulded arch to either side on octagonal responds with deep bases and
moulded capitals, hoodmoulds with head stops over. Above there are 2 lancets and
the corners of the tower are stepped in. Second stage is square to base and
octagonal to top. Each side has paired, trefoil-headed lancets below continuous
pointed hoodmoulds and each corner has a square buttress with pinnacle top.
Moulded eaves cornice above and low parapet topped by 8 crocketed pinnacles.
Octagonal spire with gableted lucarnes. North chapel has three 2-light Decorated
traceried pointed windows to east and 2 similar to west with lean-to vestry to north
which has pointed south door and paired trefoil-headed lancets to north. Coved
cornice. 4-light Decorated traceried pointed north window with stone coped gable
on moulded kneelers over. East and west gables of south chapel, each with two
pointed 2-light Decorated traceried windows with quatrefoil window over and stone
coped gables on moulded kneelers. East gable also has stepped sill band and diagonal
buttress to south. South elevation has similar 2-light windows as to north chapel
and lean-to vestry to west with steps to four-centred arched east door and paired
trefoil-headed lancets to west. Both chapels have rubble relieving arches over
all the openings. Entrance to chapels via double chamfered pointed doorways within
tower archway which has pointed ribbed vault. Interiors of chapels with arched
braced roofs.
