3/67 New House
Small house. Mid to late C17, outshut to south-east early C19.
Hammer-dressed gritstone rubble, roughly coursed. Stone slate roof.
2-room plan with contemporary partial outshut to north-east side
and later partial outshut to south-west. Rough quoins. Original
main elevation to south-west has a 2-light double-chamfered mullion
window to each floor, the mullion absent on ground floor. To right
the later outshut with 2-light slightly splayed and recessed mullion
window in left return and doorway with dressed surround in right
return. The outshut encloses the original front door which is oak
boarded, ledged and harr-hung. Damaged shouldered and corniced ashlar
stack. To rear partial outshut has single-chamfered light and doorway
with gritstone lintel and monolithic jambs. A double-chamfered mullion
window to first floor of main range. Another 3-light double-chamfered
mullion to south-east gable, otherwise altered or inserted openings.
Interior has remains of stud partition to contemporary outshut, studs
set in a grooved stone sill, stone staircase within outhsut. Back to
back stone fireplaces, one with ovolo corbels. The harr-hung front
door is a rare domestice survival and is similar to that illustrated
by C. F. Innocent in The Development of English Building Construction,
