10/72 Middlewood Hall.


House. 1808-1813 (formerly dated on lead rainwater heads, now removed).
Finely tooled sandstone, C20 cement -tile roof. Wing: coursed squared
sandstone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 x 2 bays with lower 2-bay
wing to right rear. Symmetrical facade with central pedimented bay
breaking forward. Plinth. 3 stone steps up to central C20 part-glazed
door in architrave with consoles and modillioned cornice. Doorway set
within flat-roofed open porch supported on twin clustered gothic columns,
engaged single columns to rear, frieze and cornice. Windows to flanking
bays have projecting sills, stop-chamfered reveals and lintels partly
tooled as wallstone. Band to first floor, sill band above. 5 first-
floor windows in square reveals. Plate-glass sash windows throughout,
Cornice to eaves and pediment. Hipped 2-span roof with 2 corniced ashlar
stacks. Rear: tall round-headed stair window with glazing bars. Wing
has 4-light flat-faced stone surround windows with single central mullion
and small-pane casements. Long moulded kneelers, cavetto-moulded gable
copings. Transverse ridge stack matches main stacks. Interior: ornate
cornice to entrance hall, cantilevered stair, pilaster surround to stair
