13/93 Barn and cowhouse
at Hall Broom Farm
20 metres to west
of farmhouse.


Barn and cowhouse. Probably C17, some C19 rebuilding. Cruck
framed, course gritstone rubble with C19 work to left in squared,
punched gritstone, Welsh slate roof. 5 bays (internal), single
storey except bay 5 which is 2 storey, outshut to front of bays
3 and 4. Boulder plinth to uphill left part, large quoins, rebuilt
walling. Large boarded cart door to bay 2 rising above eaves. To
right, 2 bay outshut supported on 4 rough pillars with walling between,
2 board doors and casement. To right of outshut, stone steps up to
1st floor board door, another door in quoined surround to right: end with
2 single-light chamfered openings above (1 blocked). Moulded kneelers,
gable copings. Right return: blocked 2-light double-chamfered mullion
window now enclosed in adjacent building, 2 small square-headed
chamfered lights to gable with a similar pointed light to apex.
Interior: 4 cruck pairs, left hand truss of smaller scantling. Wall
post to cruck blade adjacent to outshut. Wall tie bem to right hand
cruck has morticed soffit and upper face grooved for infill, the
beam is now underbuilt with stone. Single purlins, some wind braces.
3 trusses with saddle apex, ridge absent in bays 4 and 5. Bay 5
cowhouse has 2 chamfer-stopped spine beams with chamber over. Lower
extension to right not of special interest.
