Old Workhouse

Workhouse. 1838-39. Deeply-coursed, dressed sandstone, slate roof.
3 storeys, 2:5:1:5:2 bays; gabled central bay breaks forward and has
wing to rear; gabled end bays project as cross-wings. Floor bands.
Flat-arched windows some retaining sashes but mostly altered. Entrance
to central bay, feature in gable. Kneelers and gable copings throughout.
Grouped diagonally-set stacks to centre and ridges; 2 similar lateral
stacks to each return of end wings. Derelict and due for demolition at
time of resurvey. Originally built to house 380 people (Kelly's Directory
1881, p.311).
