5/63 Don Bridge
Shown as Don Bridge on O.S. map but also known as Grafton Bridge. Bridge.
Dated 1876. Designer 'Mr. Oliver'; contractors Armstrong and Co, Brinsworth Iron
and Steel Works (Rotherham Advertiser). Coursed, rock-faced sandstone abutment
walls with ashlar piers and parapets. Compound girders probably steel, cast-iron
balustrade. 2 segmentally-arched spans set on the splay, wing walls curved in
alignment with approach roads. Abutment walls have moulded string course beneath
seat of girders. Wing walls have projecting end piers each with faceted panel on
outer face and cornice; shaped panel on inner south-west pier inscribed 'ERECTED /
ANNO DOMINI 1876 / ALDN B.E.C. CHAMBERS / MAYOR'. Coped parapet walls, north-east
parapet and end pier missing. Renewed mid-stream piers, rivetted girders.
Decorative balustrade with pendants and 8 pierced panels to each span divided by
pillars and with moulded copings. Central panels on inner and outer faces bear
Rotherham arms (one panel missing).
