THORPE SALVIN
LITLE WOOD LANE
Nos 5, 7 and 9

(Formerly listed as Nos 7 and 9, WORKSOP ROAD (north side))

II
Cottages now three dwellings. Early and mid C18, possibly with earlier core, with C19 addition. Deeply-coursed limestone, pantile roof. Two storeys, 5:1 windows to first floor. Older part on left: large quoins. Doorway to right has chamfered ashlar surround with lintel inscribed 'MAN TO MAN IS GROWNE S0E UNJUST HE IS A WISEMAN THAT KNOWS WHOE TO TRUST' and with exterior light fixed over weathered naturalistic carving. Flanking three-light windows in double-chamfered window surrounds without mullions, similar windows over. Later doorway on left has raised ashlar surround with keystone, two square windows on left have C20 casements in raised ashlar surrounds, two similar windows over and narrower blocked window above door.

Addition set back on right has three-light window to each floor with projecting sills and plain lintels. Brick end stacks and two ridge stacks flanking bay with carved lintel. Left return: blocked doorway with bead-moulded ashlar surround and shaped lintel; two blocked windows on right have square-faced surrounds. Said to have timber wall post behind front-right quoins, two straight joints on the front wall may indicate an origin as a two-bay timber-framed house clad in early C18 and extended later in the C18. The inscribed lintel may be a re-used piece from Thorpe Salvin Old Hall (q.v).
