Description

MALTBY SANDBECK PARK
SK59SE SK58NE
4/58, 8/58 Ha-ha approximately
100 metres to west
of Sandbeck Park (house)
GV II
Ha-ha with steps. c1771-73. Probably by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown for the
Earl of Scarbrough. Coursed magnesian limestone rubble. Dry-stone retaining
wall capped by overhanging course and forming division between parkland and
gardens to Sandbeck Park (q.v.); set in a curve approximately 100 metres to
west of house then turning, at a set of steps, to continue south-west at one
point forming a bastion before running out at junction with woodland. The
labourer's wage book (cited in Girouard, p1025) suggests that much of the
years 1771-73 were occupied in constructing ha-has around the house.
M. Girouard, 'Sandbeck Park, Yorkshire III,' Country Life, Oct 21st 1965.
