The Thornton Viaduct is one of a spectacular series of circa 1876-78, is a finely
proportioned structure of sandstone "brick" with 20 semi-circular arches on slender,
tapering piers supporting the bed of the former single track line. Very thin
ashlar strings capping piers at spring of arches; flat band below the parapet. The
contractors for the line were Benton and Woodiwise. The viaduct makes a most
important contribution to the landscape of the valley below Thornton.
