Main Block to former Carlton

Grammar School
SE 1633 35/531 26.2.8O

Includes No 2 Manningham Lane. 1871-73 school on the site of the 183O grammar school.
Designed by the Andrews and Pepper partnership. Bold gothic detailing, particularly
to tower which has a saddleback roof and openwork, bartizan, spired turret to one
corner. The gables stepped with finials. Prominent dog gargoyles. Paired tall
lancets to body over tower above shafted jamb pointed arched portal. The school
building proper extends on L-plan to east with linked impost pointed arched windows.
To the west, forming the corner with Manor Row is the master's home with hipped and
gabled roof pitches. Paired mullioned windows with relieving arches and herringbone
stonework to blind pointed tympanun beneath gable. Sandstone brick with ashlar
dressings used throughout, slate roofs, the eaves partly corbelled. The tower rising
to 11O ft is a prominent feature.
