Description

1/65/684 HUDDERSFIELD ROAD
09-JUN-81 WYKE
NOS. 408-414 (EVEN), INCLUDING NOS. 41
2A AND 414A

(Formerly listed as:
HUDDERSFIELD ROAD
WYKE
406-416)

II
Nos. 408 - 414 (even), 412a and 414a Huddersfield Road, Wyke, Huddersfield, a terraced row of cottages, c.1830.

MATERIALS: Sandstone 'bricks' and stone slate roofs

PLAN: A row of four cottages facing east onto Huddersfield Road, plus two back-to-back cottages facing west at the rear of Nos. 412 and 414.

EXTERIOR: All the cottages have two-light square mullion windows in squared surrounds and there is a surviving chimney at the end of No. 408. Nos. 408 and 410 are each two bay with a door to the left, a single window above and two-light windows to each floor to the right. Nos. 412, 412a, 414 and 414a form a pair of back-to-backs with a central arched passageway from front to back. The resulting block is deeper from front to back than Nos. 408 and 410, and is also slightly higher. Each of the four units has a similar pattern of openings to Nos. 408 and 410, with the doors on the outer bay of each cottage. The passage entrances are round-arched with a central keystone.

INTERIORS: Each cottage has a single living room and scullery kitchen behind, with a bedroom, boxroom and bathroom above. There are blocked fireplaces in the inspected interiors (Nos. 410, 414 and 414a), and original straight staircases to the upper floor. The interiors of Nos. 408, 412 and 412a were not inspected.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION:
Nos 408-414 (even) and including Nos. 412A and 414A Huddersfield Road, Wyke, Bradford, a row of early C19 cottages, are designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Architectural interest: the terrace of cottages is a good example of the local vernacular using local materials and building style, including increasingly rare back-to-back construction
* Survival: there is a high level of survival of original window and door openings, roof coverings and staircases. Although some internal alteration has taken place, the ground floor layout of the cottages is unaltered.
* Date: their date of around 1830 puts them within the time period where most buildings are listed.
* Historic interest: They are evidence of the early industrial development of this suburb of Bradford.
