Lockwood and Mawson additions to the workhouse complex of circa 1860-70, necessitated
by the population explosion, attendant on the trade boom of the 1860s. Four detached
panelled, 3 storey ranges set at right angles to rear of main building. Similar
Italianate detailing, the design related to contemporary mill buildings, in
particular the stain turrets. Sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings. Sill
bands, first floor impost string, bracketed eaves cornice. Archivolt keyed arch
first floor windows. Stair turrets with narrow round headed tripartite grouped
windows. Pediment gable centre breaks to both fronts of each range. Heavy bracket
corniced portals similar to those on main building. D Block has a doorway with cornice
on long carved console brackets. Slate roofs with corniced ashlar chimneys.
