12/177 Sowerby Long Bridge

Canal bridge. c1798, partly rebuilt C20. For the Rochdale Canal Company. Coursed
squared stone. Built abutting the rock face. Quoined horseshoe arch with tie-
stones; band truncated at north-east angle; parapet with ashlar coping. Pilaster
buttress at south-west angle rises into ashlar pier with pyramidal capstone. The
north-east corner has been rebuilt from just below band level upwards. The long
tunnel has tow path on south side with large kerb stones. The Rochdale Canal was
opened up between Sowerby Bridge and Rochdale in 1798. The line was originally
surveyed by James Brindley in 1776, resurveyed by John Rennie in 1791 and
construction was finally supervised by William Jessop (engineer) and William Crossley
