27/10002 Baptist Tabernacle
II
Baptist chapel. 1902. Designed by T W T Richardson. Red brick
with painted ashlar and terracotta dressings. Slate roof.
Chamfered plinth, moulded cill and impost bands. All windows
have moulded heads, elongated keystones and banded jambs.
Street front, 2 storey. 5 windows, the central 3
recessed.Slightly projecting porch with 2 round arched
doorways with pairs of double, panel doors with stained glass
fanlights. Central and flanking banded Corinthian pilasters
supporting moulded round arches with decorative terracotta
spandrels. Above a frieze inscribed BAPTIST TABERNACLE and
above a small ornate gable bearing the date 1902, eitherside
are single pilasters with ornate gables. Eitherride are single
windows, projecting bays on eitherside have single similar
windows. Above a large segment headed 4-light window, flanked
by 3 smaller segment headed windows. The outer bays have
defining pilasters topped with ball finials and small curved
gables. Central pedimented gable has a 5 arched blind arcade
and round window in the pediment.
INTERIOR. East end has large round arched opening containing
the organ, with an ornate iron balcony. Galleries to
north,west and south also with ornate iron balconies,
supported on iron columns. Large trilobed reading desk
supported on 3 columns with flanking curved staircases.
Fittings include glazed screen, pews, doors and paneling.
