House, now flats, and adjoining wall. 1877-79, restored late
C20. Probably by George Gilbert Scott Junior for John Spyvee
Cooper. Brick with pargeted panels and hipped plain tile roof
with 2 renewed panelled side wall stacks. Queen Anne style.
Brick plinth, string courses, pargeted friezes to returns,
rebated eaves with wooden gutter. 2 storeys plus attics;
3-window range. Windows are mainly glazing bar sashes with
brick flat arches. Recessed centre has an 8-pane sash and
above, a hipped dormer with a 2-light casement. Below, a
projecting brick doorcase with multiple brick keystones and
cornice. Moulded 4-panel double door with cornice and 3-pane
mullioned fanlight. Projecting flanking bays have two 8-pane
sashes and above, a shouldered shaped gable each with a wide
8-pane sash. Below, each has a square brick bay window, that
to left renewed, each with two 8-pane sashes. Right return has
to right a pair of 8-pane sashes. Below, to left, an 8-pane
sash with a moulded brick hoodmould and a pargeted panel above
it. To right, a pair of 8-pane sashes. To left, an attached
brick wall with string course and slab coping, forming a link
with the next house. 2 round-headed doorways with brick
keystones and board doors. This building is part of a group of
8 houses by Scott, who was a leading exponent of the Queen
Anne style. They are said to be the sole surviving examples of
his highly regarded domestic architecture.
