Former hotel, now unoccupied. Facade is early and late C19;
earlier origins.
MATERIALS: stucco, with painted plinth, rusticated quoins and
surround to the main window; slate roof with brick stacks to
gable ends and a tall one to centre of rear block.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 6-window range. The right half was
symmetrical 3-window range with a carriage entrance to the
left; the far left range is higher, with a crested roof, and
may have been an adjoining house incorporated to the main
block. Three 2-storey, slightly canted bays of paired 1/1-pane
sashes with margin panes: 2 to right flank a Dutch-gabled
entrance bay with a ball finial and a painted stone red lion
on a C20 porch; above this is a round-arch 2/2-pane sash in a
painted, rusticated architrave; in the gable are raised
painted letters: THE RED LION HOTEL.
Between the main block and the far left, taller range, is a
carriage entrance with reeded pilasters, the top obscured by a
C20 sign, filled in with wooden panelling which has a door to
its left and many panes to the upper half. Above this, and to
the right of the main, round-arched window, are 1/1-pane
sashes with margin panes.
INTERIOR not inspected.
HISTORY: in 1751 The Red Lion was among the 4 leading inns in
Crewkerne.
